The KDS Village is a project of The King’s Daughters and Sons (KDS), an interdenominational Christian service organization that has been responsible for many initiatives to help the people of Ottawa since 1889. The KDS Village is located at 567 Cambridge Street South and is made up of a six-floor building with 70 apartments constructed in 1964 plus the recently completed mid-rise addition made up of 58 rental units. All 128 apartments are affordable and for seniors. The addition, built to the highest environmental standards, took in its first residents in January 2020, and now operates at close to full capacity. KDS is pleased to be able to provide affordable housing to seniors in Ottawa and is implementing a new model of community engagement at KDS Village, especially now that pandemic issues are fading. The videos below provide a unique glimpse into the life of the community at the KDS Village. The first video was taken at the celebratory official launch of the new building on 15 June 2022. The second video adds some aspects of communal living as well as outlining plans to bring the original building of 1964 up to similar environmental standards as are enjoyed by the tenants in the new addition.
This video captures the official launch on 15th June 2022 of the newly-constructed addition at KDS Village, including remarks by the Ottawa mayor, federal and provincial representatives, and KDS authorities responsible for the project, attended by many residents and friends.
This video gives a snapshot of the apartments and how residents live in them as well as some of the programmed events for residents and some of the amenities available, including the surrounding landscape and gardening opportunities. The final section of the video speaks about the KDS program to bring the 60-year original KDS Apartments up to the highest environmental and sustainable standards that the new building enjoys today.
